Presidents Quiz – November 2019

For 2019-20, the Presidents Groupings are as follows:

  • El/Mid: #1-17 (1-8 in the first round, 9-17 in the second round)
  • Jr/Sr: #1-17 in the first round, #16-33 in the second round

The Themes are all divisions will be Scandals, and Jr/Sr also plays Foreign Affairs.

  1. I served in Congress, as secretary of state for President Polk, and as minister to Britain and Russia. I won only four of fourteen northern states in the presidential election and gained only 45.3% of the popular vote.

  2. At age 45, I set sail for France with my son to represent the Second Continental Congress. The purpose of my trip was to secure an alliance with the French.

  3. I got my nickname from a battle in which the militia I led defeated a fighting force of Native American tribes assembled by Shawnee chief Tecumseh.

  4. I am the only president to serve in the U.S. Senate after being president. In my only speech from the senate floor, I denounced President Grant’s reconstruction policy.

  5. My wife hosted a gala at Long’s Hotel that is considered the first official inaugural ball. 400 tickets were sold at a cost of $4 apiece.

#16-33

  1. I ran for president as my party’s nominee three times. The first two times resulted in consecutive defeats for the incumbent president for the first time in our nation’s history.

  2. Working with General George Marshall, head of the U.S. Army, I ordered new war plans to be created as well as a limited preparedness campaign to protect the Panama Canal and the U.S. mainland from aerial attacks.

  3. When the Kansas-Nebraska Act caused a split in the Whig party, I remained faithful to the party of Henry Clay. I helped keep our party united against Senator Stephen Douglas in my home state. I remained steadfast in my opposition to the extension of slavery into the western territories.

  4. My campaign slogan for the presidential election was “Let Us Have Peace.” The Transcontinental Railroad was completed while I was president.

  5. One historian has called me “the only president to approach the office in constitutional terms above all.” Unlike my predecessor, who was known as the “Trust Buster,” and my successor, I believed that presidents should exercise only the powers explicitly granted them by the Constitution.
