#35-45

Identify the president from each clue.

  1. The Enron Scandal in my first year as president led to the bankruptcy of Enron, an important energy corporation, due to accounting irregularities that claimed inflated profits. The Department of Homeland Security was formed during my second year as president.
  2. My parents, Earl and Lillian, owned a peanut farm and warehouse and store. I served in the U.S. Navy. While the submarine on which I served was docked in Bermuda, British officials there extended a party invitation to the white crew members only. Partly at my urging, everyone on the submarine refused to attend.
  3. I was a big James Bond fan. I first met the author of the series, Ian Fleming, at a dinner party in the year that I won the nomination of my party for president. Rumors spread that we discussed how to get rid of Fidel Castro. My grandfather served as mayor of a large Northern city.
  4. After my election, I said, “I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.” As president, I pardoned Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio who was convicted of contempt of court for ignoring a judge’s order to stop detaining people because he merely suspected them of being undocumented immigrants.
  5. I played the great pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander in a baseball movie/love story opposite Doris Day. As president, I spent 13 days in the hospital following an assassination attempt.
